Former Perth Wildcats Centre Ollie Hayes-Brown Poised for AFL Debut with Richmond
In a remarkable sporting transition, former Perth Wildcats basketballer Ollie Hayes-Brown is firmly in contention to make his AFL debut for Richmond this weekend. The 208cm giant, who switched codes less than three years ago, could face a baptism of fire against Fremantle's formidable ruck duo.
Richmond's Ruck Crisis Opens Door for Hayes-Brown
Richmond have been thrust into a ruck crisis following captain Toby Nankervis' hamstring injury during last weekend's loss to Gold Coast. This has catapulted 25-year-old Hayes-Brown into the selection frame, just two-and-a-half years after he signed with the Tigers as a Category B rookie. Hayes-Brown made 13 NBL appearances across two seasons with the Wildcats as a development player before embarking on his football journey.
Tigers coach Adem Yze confirmed that Hayes-Brown is "in the mix" for the upcoming clash with Fremantle. "We could fill it with different people that have done it — Campbell Gray helped us out in the ruck in the last few weeks and then obviously went and played down back on the weekend at VFL level," Yze said. "Samson Ryan's coming back and playing some footy this weekend, but it won't be at AFL level. We'll have those discussions later (on Wednesday) afternoon and work out the best fit, but he'll be in those discussions, for sure."
Hayes-Brown's Rapid Rise in Football
Hayes-Brown began his transition to footy by playing local football for VAFA side Old Ivanhoe. He has since become a regular for Richmond's VFL side, debuting in June 2024 and playing 26 reserves games. In the first round of the VFL season last Saturday, he faced a tough ruck battle against Southport's Brayden Crossley, losing the hit-out count 40-15. However, he demonstrated his versatility by making an impact around the ground, with 15 contested possessions, four contested marks, and five clearances.
Fremantle's Ruck Situation and Match Outlook
Fremantle's ruck division is also facing uncertainty ahead of the clash. Luke Jackson was only a light participant at training on Tuesday due to a cork in his leg, sustained during an impressive win over Melbourne. Sean Darcy struggled to contain Max Gawn in that match, while Mason Cox impressed in a WAFL practice match for Peel Thunder, recording 17 disposals and 38 hit-outs.
The Dockers enter the game as overwhelming favourites, with TABtouch pricing them at $1.05 against Richmond's $10 odds. This is the shortest price Fremantle have started at since last year's second western derby, which they won by 49 points. Weather conditions may play a significant role, with forecasts predicting up to 60mm of rain and winds as strong as 55km/h on Saturday due to Cyclone Narelle moving down the WA coast.
Richmond's Injury Woes Deepen
Richmond's challenges extend beyond the ruck crisis, with several key players sidelined by injuries. Premiership stars Tom Lynch (hamstring) and Nathan Broad (calf) will miss the game, joining a growing injury list that includes Rhyan Mansell (wrist) and first-round draft picks Sam Cumming (shoulder) and Josh Smillie (quad).
As the Tigers navigate these setbacks, the potential debut of Ollie Hayes-Brown adds an intriguing subplot to the match, highlighting his rapid adaptation from basketball to Australian rules football.
