The 43-year-old, who played 13 games for the Cats between 2001 and 2003, was diagnosed with appendiceal cancer (goblet cell adenocarcinoma) in late 2023 after initially experiencing what he thought were stomach ulcers.
A Sudden and Serious Diagnosis
Christensen's journey began with persistent stomach pain that was eventually investigated through a colonoscopy and CT scan. The results were shocking. "They found a tumour in my appendix," Christensen explained. The specific cancer, goblet cell adenocarcinoma, is exceptionally rare, accounting for only a small percentage of appendix cancers and often presenting with vague symptoms that make early detection difficult.
In a significant and life-altering surgery in December 2023, surgeons at Epworth Hospital performed a right hemicolectomy, removing a portion of his colon. The procedure lasted several hours. Following the surgery, Christensen faced a challenging recovery and then embarked on a course of chemotherapy, which he has recently completed.
