Former AFL Star Jake Carlisle Caught in Local Football Controversy
Former St Kilda and Essendon footballer Jake Carlisle has become embroiled in a significant local football controversy after disturbing footage surfaced on social media. The vision appears to show the 34-year-old striking a teammate in the head during a match, sparking widespread condemnation and leading to his abrupt departure from his coaching role.
Shocking Incident During Good Friday Match
The controversial incident occurred during Moama's Round 1 clash against Echuca United in the Murray Football League on Good Friday. Despite the altercation, Moama went on to secure a 22-point victory in the match. Independent sports reporter Matt Jackson brought the vision to public attention through his social media platforms, describing Carlisle's actions as "disgusting behaviour" and "a disgrace."
Jackson expressed particular concern about the incident given Carlisle's leadership position, stating: "He only signed on to coach in October last year, and I believe that this wasn't the first indiscretion that he had in that four months as well. Cannot be smacking your teammate in the face particularly when you're the coach."
Sudden Departure from Moama
Carlisle had been announced as playing coach for Moama in October last year but has now left the club after just two games into the season. Moama president Scott Slater provided minimal explanation to the local Leader newspaper, stating: "Official line is that he has moved back to Melbourne hence why he has been cleared. Nothing more to add sorry."
The timing of his departure coincides with Moama having a bye this weekend, following their 32-point loss to Congupna last weekend. Meanwhile, Carlisle has reportedly been cleared to return to his former club, Wallan, which competes in the Riddell District Football League. Wallan won their Round 1 clash and will face Woodend-Hesket this weekend.
Controversial AFL Career Background
Jake Carlisle's football career has been marked by controversy throughout his time at the elite level. The defender played 151 games at AFL level, concluding his professional career with St Kilda at the end of the 2021 season. His career was significantly impacted by the Essendon supplements scandal, which resulted in him being one of 34 players banned for the entire 2016 season - coincidentally his first year at St Kilda after transferring from Essendon.
The recent incident has reignited discussions about player conduct at all levels of football and the responsibilities that come with coaching positions in community sports. Local football communities are now watching closely to see how both Moama and Wallan navigate the aftermath of this controversial situation involving the former AFL star.
