The West Coast Eagles' impressive upset victory over the Greater Western Sydney Giants has come at a significant cost, with forward Jack Hutchinson suffering a hamstring injury just two games into his return from a foot stress fracture.
Hutchinson's Injury Blow
Hutchinson played a pivotal role in the Eagles' triumph, kicking two goals and laying seven tackles to help lift the team's pressure. However, scans have revealed a low-to-moderate grade hamstring strain, ruling him out for three to five weeks.
West Coast high performance manager Phil Merriman confirmed the setback: "Unfortunately, Hutch felt some hamstring awareness late in the game. Scans have shown a low-to-moderate grade strain, and we'll let that settle before confirming an exact time frame."
The injury is a cruel blow for Hutchinson, who had only recently returned from a stress fracture in his foot and was beginning to find form.
Brandon Starcevich Nears Debut
In more positive news for the Eagles, two-time Brisbane premiership defender Brandon Starcevich is a step closer to making his West Coast debut. The 25-year-old is set to play for the club's WAFL affiliate this weekend after overcoming a calf issue.
"It's exciting times for Starce and our fans," Merriman said. "As long as he gets through training this week, he'll return on managed minutes as we build him back into full match play."
Starcevich, who joined West Coast during the off-season, has been sidelined with a calf complaint but is now on the verge of donning the blue and gold for the first time.
Archer Reid Close to Return
Forward-ruck Archer Reid is also closing in on a return after a strong week on the track. The 20-year-old has missed the past four games with a knee complaint but could be available for selection if he gets through training.
"Arch had a really good training week last week," Merriman said. "He'll need to get through training before being assessed, with his availability to be determined after that."
Injury List Updates
The Eagles are no closer to determining when veteran forward Jamie Cripps (knee) or tall defender Harry Edwards (concussion) will return. Merriman provided an update on Edwards: "Harry is in great spirits around the club. We'll follow the appropriate process to make sure we get the best care that Harry needs before considering what the next step in his football will be."
Other players on the injury list include Tyler Brockman (knee, 2-3 weeks), Jack Graham (shoulder, 5-6 weeks), and Sam Allen (knee/hamstring, TBC). Noah Long, Jacob Newton, and Dev Robertson are all sidelined for the season.
Upcoming Clash with Collingwood
The Eagles, who have changed their name to Waalitj Marawar for Sir Doug Nicholls Round, will face Collingwood at the MCG on Saturday. The match will mark Magpie veteran Scott Pendlebury's AFL record 433rd game and Harley Reid's 50th.
Collingwood is set to welcome back ruck Darcy Cameron from an ankle injury, while captain Darcy Moore, Patrick Lipinski, and Lachie Sullivan are working through concussion protocols. Key forward Tim Membrey has returned to full training after a hamstring injury and will be a late call.
West Coast will be hoping to continue their improved form despite the mounting injury list, with the clash against the Magpies shaping as a significant test.
