Eagles draft versatile Ballarat talent Jovie Skewes-Clinton

The West Coast Eagles have bolstered their AFLW squad with the acquisition of versatile Ballarat talent Jovie Skewes-Clinton, selected with pick 36 in the 2025 AFLW Draft held on Monday, December 15.

From Goldfields to the West Coast

The historic Victorian town of Ballarat, renowned for producing football royalty like Tony Lockett, Adam Goodes, and Mick Malthouse, has unveiled its latest star. Skewes-Clinton, 18, becomes the newest name on that prestigious list, joining the Eagles alongside West Perth's Mia Russo as the club's two draft selections.

"I had a little feeling. I'd spoken to them a lot through the year and really liked talking to them," Skewes-Clinton told The West Australian. "I've never been to WA so it'll be exciting. When I think WA I think nice beaches and good weather. It's a long way from Ballarat. I can't wait."

A Damaging and Versatile Prospect

Standing at 176cm, Skewes-Clinton is described as a physically strong and impactful player who has excelled at both ends of the ground. She spent the past two seasons with the Greater Western Victoria Rebels in the Coates Talent League, honing her craft under respected coach Sally Riley.

Initially establishing herself as a defender in 2024, she averaged 12.6 disposals, 2.1 marks, 3.4 tackles, and 2.3 rebound 50s per game. Her role evolved in 2025, seeing her push forward more frequently, resulting in a total of 27 goals across 16 games over the two campaigns.

"That became normal – back and then forward – I loved it though, to be able to play so many different roles," she said, embracing her versatility. "Being able to be versatile and play everywhere you can always be involved."

A Dream Realised Under an Idol

Skewes-Clinton's football journey began at age eight in a boys' team at Ballarat's East Point, progressing through Bungaree and Ballarat Football Club before her time with the Rebels. While she was a Richmond supporter pre-draft, her greatest inspiration came from watching Melbourne champion Daisy Pearce.

In a remarkable turn of events, Pearce is now her senior coach at West Coast. The new Eagles mentor, along with co-captain Bella Lewis, personally visited Skewes-Clinton at her Ballarat home on Tuesday following the draft.

"I can't believe I will be playing under Daisy to be honest," Skewes-Clinton admitted. "As a kid she was always someone that I looked up to. It's just unreal to be able to have such a good role model as my coach now." She also cites three-time All-Australian Chloe Molloy as a key inspiration.

The Eagles' latest recruit embodies the modern AFLW player: tall, athletic, and capable of influencing the game in multiple positions. Her signing marks another strategic step for the club as they build a competitive list under Daisy Pearce's leadership.
