Melbourne Demons father-son recruit Kalani White has been temporarily sidelined from the club's pre-season program after receiving a diagnosis of glandular fever. The 18-year-old forward-ruck has returned to his home state of Queensland to focus on his recovery, with expectations that he will rejoin the Demons in the coming weeks.
Family Legacy and Draft Decision
White is a product of the Gold Coast Suns Academy but held eligibility to nominate Melbourne as a father-son selection, owing to his father Jeff's significant career with the Demons. Jeff White played 236 of his 268 AFL games for Melbourne, establishing himself as a champion ruck between 1998 and 2008 after starting his career at Fremantle.
The young talent delayed his decision until August last year before ultimately choosing to follow in his father's footsteps. Melbourne pre-listed him as a Category A rookie after the national draft, securing his services for the future.
Injury Challenges for the Demons
White's absence compounds existing injury concerns for Melbourne, particularly following Tuesday's announcement that midfield bull and vice-captain Jack Viney will miss approximately half the season after undergoing Achilles surgery.
Demons captain Max Gawn revealed Viney is not expected to feature in the first three months of the campaign. The midfielder had been managing Achilles soreness since December, with the club initially optimistic about his availability for their Round 1 clash against St Kilda.
Midfield Reshuffle and Opportunities
Viney's injury leaves Gawn as the sole regular in Melbourne's engine room, following the departures of fellow All-Australians and 2021 premiership players Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver. This situation has created openings for other players to stake their claim.
Gawn highlighted the recruitment of former Saints skipper Jack Steele as particularly timely, noting that Steele's arrival provides valuable midfield depth. The captain expressed confidence in the team's adaptability, suggesting that having multiple players capable of filling midfield roles could prove advantageous.
Young prospects including Caleb Windsor, Harvey Langford, and Xavier Lindsay will have opportunities to push for selection, alongside established players like Trent Rivers and Tom Sparrow. The Demons also hope midfielder Jai Culley will be fit for round one after recovering from an arm fracture sustained during training.
Recovery Timelines and Pre-Season Plans
White is considered a long-term prospect for Melbourne and wasn't expected to feature in senior matches early in his career. His recovery from glandular fever will be monitored closely as he works toward returning to full training.
The Demons face additional absences with defender Jake Bowey also expected to miss nearly half the campaign following foot surgery in December. These injuries will test the squad's depth as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Melbourne will have their first opportunity to trial their reshuffled midfield when they face North Melbourne in pre-season match simulation on February 20. This session will provide valuable insights into how the team adapts to their current personnel challenges.
