Cairns Anzac Day to Honour Military Families and Mark 100 Years of Cenotaph
Cairns Anzac Day: Honouring Families and Cenotaph Centenary

Cairns is preparing for a poignant Anzac Day commemoration in 2025, with the event set to honour the sacrifices of military families and celebrate the 100th anniversary of the city's cenotaph. The annual dawn service and march will take place on April 25, drawing thousands of residents and visitors to pay their respects.

The cenotaph, located on the Esplanade, was first unveiled in 1925 to remember those who served in World War I. This year's milestone will be marked with special ceremonies, including a wreath-laying and the reading of names of local soldiers who died in conflicts.

Organisers from the Cairns RSL Sub Branch have emphasised the importance of recognising not only the veterans but also their families, who have supported them through the challenges of service. The event will feature a dedicated segment to acknowledge the role of families in the defence force community.

Dawn Service and March Details

The dawn service will commence at 4:28 AM, with the march stepping off at 9:00 AM from the Cairns City Library. Participants will proceed along Abbott Street to the cenotaph for a commemorative service. Schools, community groups, and defence force personnel are expected to take part.

Community Involvement

Local schools have been invited to contribute artworks and essays on the theme of 'Service and Sacrifice', which will be displayed at the event. The Cairns community is encouraged to attend and show support for current and former service members.

The 100-year milestone of the cenotaph will be highlighted through historical displays and a time capsule opening, offering a glimpse into the past. The RSL has also called for descendants of original soldiers to come forward and share their stories.

In addition to the main events, a commemorative concert will be held on the evening of April 24 at the Cairns Performing Arts Centre, featuring military bands and tributes to the Anzac spirit.
