Collingwood Magpies forward Bobby Hill will temporarily step away from the AFL club, having been granted personal leave as the team resumes its pre-season preparations.
Club and Player Unite on Decision
The club confirmed the move in an official statement released on Friday, 9 January 2026. The decision was described as a mutual agreement between Hill, his management, and the Collingwood Football Club.
Collingwood's Executive General Manager of Football, Charlie Gardiner, emphasised that the player's welfare was the absolute priority. "We care for Bobby and his health and wellbeing remain the priority as he continues to work through his personal situation," Gardiner stated.
Support During Absence
Gardiner confirmed the club's ongoing support for the 25-year-old during his time away from the AFL program. "While on leave from the AFL program, we will continue to support Bobby so that he can be in the best possible position to return to the club in a full-time capacity when appropriate," he said.
The leave comes as the Magpies returned to pre-season training this week. It is understood Hill's need for leave relates to ongoing personal circumstances, following his separation from his partner, the mother of his children, during the middle of last year.
Recent History and Future at the Pies
This is not the first time Hill has taken time away from the game for personal reasons. He previously stepped away for five weeks late in the 2025 season, returning in Round 21 against the Brisbane Lions. He did not play again for the remainder of the season, even as Collingwood progressed to a preliminary final.
Despite these challenges, Hill's future at the club appears secure. He is under contract with Collingwood until the end of the 2030 season, having signed a significant four-year extension in early 2025.
Hill's talent is undeniable, famously showcased in the Magpies' 2023 premiership victory where he was awarded the Norm Smith Medal for best on ground after kicking four crucial goals in the Grand Final win over Brisbane.
The club has not provided a specific timeline for Hill's return, reiterating that his personal wellbeing is the central focus for all parties involved.
