Canberra Raiders rookie Savelio Tamale has been training with GWS Giants forward Tom Green to enhance his aerial ability, a crucial skill for the NRL winger.
Cross-code collaboration
The 20-year-old Tamale, who made his NRL debut last season, has been working with Green, a key player for the AFL Giants, to improve his marking and leaping skills. Tamale, a former rugby union player, is looking to add an extra dimension to his game as he vies for a regular spot in the Raiders' backline.
“I’ve been doing some sessions with Tom to work on my high-ball stuff,” Tamale said. “He’s been really helpful, showing me some techniques to read the flight of the ball and position myself better.”
Raiders preseason push
Tamale is one of several young Raiders pushing for selection in the upcoming season. The Raiders have a strong backline, but Tamale's pace and athleticism make him a promising prospect. He played two NRL games in 2024, scoring a try on debut against the Dolphins.
“Savelio has a lot of potential,” Raiders coach Ricky Stuart said. “He’s fast, strong, and willing to learn. Working with Tom Green is a great initiative to improve his aerial skills, which are vital for a winger in today’s game.”
AFL influence on NRL
The collaboration highlights the growing cross-pollination between NRL and AFL players, particularly in skill development. Green, who stands at 194cm, is known for his contested marking ability. Tamale, at 185cm, hopes to add similar aerial prowess to his game.
“In the NRL, high balls are a big part of the game for wingers,” Tamale said. “Being able to compete in the air gives you an edge. Tom’s tips have been gold.”
Tamale will continue training with Green throughout the preseason as he aims to break into the Raiders' starting lineup for the 2025 season.
