Morocco produced a stunning upset to knock out France 2-1 in the World Cup last 16 on Sunday, while Paraguay edged South Korea 1-0 to book their place in the quarter-finals.
Morocco's Historic Victory
Morocco took the lead in the 35th minute through a well-worked goal from Hakim Ziyech, who slotted home after a clever pass from Achraf Hakimi. France equalised just before half-time when Kylian Mbappe converted a penalty after a handball decision went against Morocco. However, Morocco regained the lead in the 68th minute when substitute Sofiane Boufal headed in from a corner. France pushed for an equaliser but Morocco's defence held firm to secure their first-ever quarter-final appearance.
According to Morocco coach Walid Regragui, "This is a dream come true for our nation. The players showed incredible character and belief." France coach Didier Deschamps admitted his side were second best: "We were not at our best today. Morocco deserved the win."
Paraguay's Gritty Win
In the other match of the day, Paraguay secured a narrow 1-0 victory over South Korea. The only goal came in the 22nd minute when Miguel Almiron fired home from close range after a defensive error. South Korea dominated possession but failed to break down a resolute Paraguayan defence. Paraguay goalkeeper Antony Silva made several crucial saves to preserve the clean sheet.
Paraguay coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto praised his team's discipline: "We knew it would be tough, but the players executed the game plan perfectly." South Korea coach Paulo Bento lamented missed chances: "We had enough opportunities to score but lacked the final touch."
Quarter-Final Line-Up
Morocco will face Brazil in the quarter-finals, while Paraguay take on Argentina. The matches are scheduled for later this week. Morocco's win marks the first time an African team has reached the World Cup quarter-finals since Ghana in 2010. Paraguay, meanwhile, continue their impressive run after finishing second in their group behind Belgium.
