In the latest episode of Football Weekly, Max Rushden is joined by Barry Glendenning, Jonathan Liew, and Philippe Auclair to preview Groups I through L of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This is the third and final group-stage preview before the tournament kicks off this summer.
Group I: France Headline a Competitive Bunch
Group I features the incredibly talented France team, managed by Didier Deschamps in his final tournament at the helm. After losing the 2022 final in Qatar, France will look to go one step further. They face a potentially tricky group that includes Senegal, Norway, and Iraq. Senegal brings African strength, Norway boasts rising stars, and Iraq is a disciplined side capable of causing upsets.
Group J: Argentina Aim to Defend Their Crown
Group J sees Argentina, the reigning champions, alongside Algeria, Austria, and Jordan. The question is whether Lionel Messi and his squad can achieve back-to-back World Cup titles. Algeria and Austria present significant challenges, while Jordan will look to make an impact on the global stage.
Group K: Portugal Stand Out, but Ronaldo Looms
Portugal are the standout team in Group K, which also includes DR Congo, Uzbekistan, and Colombia. Portugal has a brilliant squad on paper, but Cristiano Ronaldo's presence looms large over everything. Colombia, with their flair and experience, could threaten Portugal's dominance, while DR Congo and Uzbekistan are unpredictable.
Group L: England Under Tuchel Face Tough Tests
Finally, Group L sees England, now managed by Thomas Tuchel, aiming to go all the way. They must first navigate past Croatia, Ghana, and Panama. Croatia's midfield experience, Ghana's athleticism, and Panama's resilience make this a challenging group for the Three Lions.
