Former San Francisco 49ers linebacker and coach Aldon Smith has died at the age of 34, his family confirmed on Saturday. The cause of death has not been disclosed, but the football community has been quick to pay tribute to the troubled star who later turned his life around as a mentor.
A Promising Career Derailed by Off-Field Issues
Smith was selected by the 49ers with the seventh overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft out of Missouri. He burst onto the scene with 14 sacks as a rookie, setting a franchise record. Over his first two seasons, he amassed 33.5 sacks, the most by any player in NFL history over that span. However, his career was plagued by multiple arrests and suspensions for substance abuse and other legal issues. He was released by the 49ers in 2015 and later played for the Oakland Raiders and Dallas Cowboys, but never recaptured his early form.
Redemption as a Coach
After several years away from football, Smith returned to the 49ers in 2024 as a defensive assistant coach, working with the team's linebackers. He was praised for his ability to connect with players and share his experiences. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said in a statement: “Aldon was a passionate and dedicated coach who made a positive impact on our young players. Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.”
Tributes from the NFL Community
Former teammates and opponents alike expressed their sorrow. Hall of Fame linebacker Patrick Willis tweeted: “Heartbroken to hear about Aldon. He was a brother to me. Praying for his family.” The 49ers organization released a statement saying: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Aldon Smith. He was a beloved member of our 49ers family. We extend our condolences to his loved ones.”
Smith is survived by his parents and two children. Funeral arrangements are pending.
