Frog catches wasp mid-air
A frog leaps from a lily pad to snatch a wasp out of the air in a split-second capture. The image, taken by photographer John Smith in a pond in Queensland, shows the amphibian with its mouth wide open, the wasp just inches away. Smith said he waited hours for the perfect shot. 'I saw the frog eyeing the wasp, and I knew something special was about to happen,' he said.
Penguin rides a wave
In a rare sight, a king penguin was photographed surfing a wave off the coast of Macquarie Island. The bird appeared to be riding the swell for fun, according to wildlife guide Emma Jones. 'It was like watching a surfer, but with flippers,' she said. The penguin repeated the behaviour several times, suggesting it was playing.
Treehopper displays elaborate horns
A treehopper insect in the Amazon rainforest shows off its intricate, horn-like structure, which scientists believe is used for camouflage and attracting mates. The image, captured by entomologist Dr. Maria Lopez, reveals the insect's transparent wings and ornate headgear. 'The treehopper's design is so complex, it looks like a tiny piece of art,' she said.
