Andy Burnham has issued a stark warning to the Labour Party, urging it to urgently address the threat posed by Reform UK after Nigel Farage's victory in a recent by-election. The Greater Manchester mayor called for a bold policy reset to reconnect with voters who have turned to the right-wing populist party.
Burnham's Call for Action
Speaking to the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Burnham said Labour must "wake up" to the appeal of Reform UK, which he described as a "serious political force." He argued that the party's success in the Wellingborough by-election, where Farage secured a stunning win, should be a "massive wake-up call" for Labour leadership.
"We cannot simply dismiss Reform voters as racists or bigots. Many are decent people who feel ignored by mainstream politics," Burnham stated. He emphasised that Labour needs to offer a compelling alternative on issues like immigration, housing, and the cost of living.
Reform UK's Growing Influence
Reform UK's victory in Wellingborough, a seat previously held by the Conservatives with a majority of over 18,000, has sent shockwaves through British politics. Farage, who returned to frontline politics earlier this year, has positioned his party as the true opposition to Labour, capitalising on discontent with both major parties.
According to polling data, Reform UK now commands around 15% of the national vote, up from 5% at the last general election. The party has also made inroads in traditional Labour strongholds in the North of England, where Burnham's influence is strongest.
