Lachlan Doig, a Perth resident, has won the AFLW tipping competition run by The Game and Complete Home Filtration, taking home $10,000. Doig finished with 84 points, tying with second place but winning on a superior margin.
Doig admitted the win came down to a tense decision in the final round. He said he turned off his phone before the West Coast-Carlton game, ultimately sticking with his initial tip of Carlton. The Eagles lost, securing Doig's victory as he matched the tips of the runner-up.
Doig, who tipped under the username WharfieTime, credited his success to separating club loyalty from his picks. He said tipping against Fremantle, his team, stings less if they lose. He also described building "happiness insurance" by not always tipping his own side.
This was Doig's first year of football tipping since high school. He returned through a work competition for the men's AFL and continued into the AFLW season. He plans to keep tipping in the upcoming cricket competition and will use the prize money to pay for a new car.
