Harley Reid Scares West Coast on Day One of Pre-Season

West Coast Eagles breathed a sigh of relief on Monday after star midfielder Harley Reid caused a scare during the first day of AFL pre-season training. The former No.1 draft pick was participating in a maximal aerobic speed (MAS) test with his first-to-fourth-year teammates at Mineral Resources Park when he suddenly pulled up, pointing to his calf.

7NEWS Perth reporter Ryan Daniels initially reported that Reid had stopped, sparking concerns. However, it was soon revealed the issue was cramp, likely due to warm conditions. Reid stretched out, put his shoes back on, and rejoined training shortly after, easing fears of a serious injury.

Hamish Davis won the MAS test, narrowly beating Clay Hall. The test involves a recorded beep that increases speed as players run laps. Reid had started strong but pulled out midway, speaking to fitness staff and coach Andrew McQualter before receiving treatment on the sidelines.

Reid had told The West Australian last week that he worked hard during the off-season to improve his endurance after struggling with fitness last season. The session also saw several experienced players, including captain Liam Duggan, Elliot Yeo, and Jamie Cripps, following their own training programs instead of the fitness test.

CEO Don Pyke expressed optimism about the team's attitude, stating, 'They understand we’ve got some work to do. I think they’re here with the right attitude to do the work which is what we need to do to climb back up the ladder.'
