Football Australia Backs Popovic After World Cup Exit
FA Backs Popovic After World Cup Exit

Football Australia (FA) has publicly reaffirmed its confidence in head coach Tony Popovic following the Socceroos' exit from the World Cup in the Round of 32. The team suffered a 4-2 penalty shootout defeat to Egypt after a 1-1 draw through regular and extra time, extending Australia's winless run in knockout matches at the tournament.

FA Endorses Popovic's Decisions

FA chief executive Martin Kugeler and football director Heather Garriock voiced their full support for Popovic, particularly regarding his controversial decision to substitute in-form goalkeeper Patrick Beach for captain Maty Ryan ahead of the penalty shootout. Ryan had not played a single minute during the tournament. Kugeler stated, "Every fan will think about what can be done better, but the coaching staff and Tony Popovic are always in the best place to judge in that moment what is needed for the team." He added, "In hindsight, everyone always knows better, but you have to make those calls in the moment based on what you've seen in training, what is your impression in talking to the players. So Tony Popovic has absolutely our confidence."

Garriock also defended the decision to list 18-year-old Lucas Herrington as the fourth penalty taker, a move that backfired when Herrington missed his spot-kick. She expressed "full belief" in Popovic, describing him as a brave and methodical coach, and said she was not surprised by the goalkeeper switch.

Contract Extension Justified

FA extended Popovic's contract until after next year's Asian Cup before the World Cup even began, a decision Kugeler said he was "absolutely" comfortable with. He highlighted Popovic's achievements since taking over, including guiding Australia to direct World Cup qualification with an 11-game winning streak and building squad depth. Kugeler noted, "Just wind back to the time when Tony Popovic took over, we were in a difficult spot for the World Cup qualification. He took us to direct qualification, a winning streak of 11 games, building depth of the squad — and then let's look at this World Cup."

World Cup Performance Praised Despite Exit

Kugeler hailed Australia's performance in the tournament, including a surprise 2-0 victory over Turkey, a strong second half against the United States, and a mature display against Paraguay. "So getting out of a very difficult group and qualifying for the Round of 32 has been an enormous success," he said. "So, yes, we're absolutely happy about the decision to extend this contract. He is the right person to now take this group into the next major tournament and apply all the experiences, all the learnings from this tournament into the next major tournament."

Room for Improvement Acknowledged

Despite the backing, the Socceroos' shortcomings were evident. They failed to score in their final three games, aside from an own goal by Egypt, and have still not secured a knockout win at the World Cup. When asked if FA was satisfied, Garriock said, "We certainly are satisfied with the result, but there's always more left in us."
