A 30-year-old woman has been arrested after a dramatic attempt to jump into a moving car while allegedly trying to flee police in central Queensland. The incident occurred on the Dawson Highway at Gladstone around 7:15pm on Wednesday, when a police officer on patrol recognised the woman, who was wanted on an arrest warrant for multiple alleged property crimes in the region.
Desperate escape attempt
The Maryborough woman was confronted by the officer but immediately ran along the highway. In a desperate bid to escape, she attempted to jump into a moving car. Police body-worn camera footage captured the officer running alongside oncoming traffic, yelling at the woman to “get off the road” as he pursued her.
She was eventually restrained and removed from the car before being taken into custody a short time later. The woman was charged with 20 offences, including unauthorised use of a motor vehicle and assaulting a police officer. She appeared in Gladstone Magistrates Court on Thursday and was remanded in custody to reappear on August 3.
Second suspect arrested
Investigations also led police to a makeshift campsite in dense bushland, where a man allegedly involved in the same thefts was found. Stolen property was reportedly located at the site. The man was arrested and charged with 14 offences, including enter and commit and stealing. He was also remanded in custody to reappear in Gladstone Magistrates Court on August 3.
Police have urged anyone with information to contact them. The incident highlights the risks taken by individuals attempting to evade law enforcement in the region.
