Canberra teenager Cam Myers has announced himself as a global force in middle-distance running, shattering the Australian and Oceania area record in the Bowerman men's mile at the Eugene Diamond League in the United States.
Record-Breaking Performance
Myers, 20, clocked 3:46.06 to smash the previous mark, just a week after winning a 1500m event in Paris. The performance made him the youngest winner of the prestigious Bowerman Mile since 2009.
"I'm feeling super excited," Myers said. "That's the first Diamond League I've won. I know I won Paris last week, but it was a non-Diamond League, so I didn't count it. It's nice to finally have won one. I think I've got second and third before, so it's nice to have actually won a Diamond League event, specifically the Bowerman Mile."
Race Strategy
Myers took control of the race with a powerful kick, visibly accelerating with about 100 metres to go. "He's destroyed that field," a commentator said. "Nuguse left it too late, when he moved round the outside and tried to attack, Cam Myers had gone."
United States duo Yared Nuguse (3:46.61) and Ethan Strand (3:46.97) completed the podium. Myers admitted he had no idea what time he might run. "I just had no clue. You rarely run miles as an Australian, so it was more about testing myself," he said.
Focus on Winning
The young star has shifted his mindset from chasing times to chasing victories. "I've sort of shifted, I just want to win the races now. I have sort of ticked off the times, and if I focus on winning the races, the times will follow," Myers said.
His sights are now set on the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in three weeks. "I'm racing at Comm Games in three weeks, so now a good solid training block, and we'll see what comes out there. To win the Comm Games would be awesome," he added.
Future Potential
Commentators were quick to praise the Canberra product's potential. "[Myers had] kicked it hard, visibly accelerated with about 100m to go, there's more in the tank for this young fella. He's strong, he's fast and he's just 20. Watch this fella," the commentator said.
Myers' record-breaking run comes amid a stellar season that has seen him emerge as one of Australia's brightest athletics prospects. His time of 3:46.06 places him among the fastest milers in history, and with the Commonwealth Games looming, the 20-year-old is poised to add a major title to his growing resume.
