Teenagers Face Court Over Alleged Violent Bus Stop Rampage in Cairns

Two teenagers have been formally charged following an alleged violent rampage at a bus stop in Cairns, with police now revealing that a fourth victim was threatened with a knife during the chaotic incident. The disturbing events unfolded in the early hours of Wednesday morning, sending shockwaves through the local community.

Series of Attacks Near Shopping Centre

Police allege that the teens, aged 17 and 18, carried out a series of brutal attacks near a shopping centre on Mulgrave Road in Earlville, Cairns, just before 6:20 am on Wednesday. According to authorities, the violence began when a 58-year-old man was allegedly assaulted at the bus stop. Moments later, a 24-year-old man was allegedly wounded and robbed at the same location, suffering a chest wound that required medical attention.

A 69-year-old Good Samaritan who attempted to intervene in the escalating situation was then allegedly attacked, sustaining a significant head injury that necessitated hospital treatment. Police have further disclosed that a 52-year-old woman was also allegedly threatened with a knife while trying to assist the injured 24-year-old man. Fortunately, the woman emerged physically unharmed from the terrifying ordeal.

Arrests and Multiple Charges

The two teenagers were arrested approximately at 8:45 am on nearby Mestrez Street, which is roughly a ten-minute walk from the bus stop where the attacks occurred. The suspects include an 18-year-old man from Mooroobool and a 17-year-old boy from Keriri Island. Both individuals have been charged with multiple serious offences and have been refused bail ahead of their court appearances.

The 17-year-old faces charges including armed robbery, assault occasioning bodily harm while armed, acts intended to cause bodily harm, and serious assault of a person older than 60. The 18-year-old has been charged with offences such as armed robbery, serious assault while armed, and acts intended to cause bodily harm. Both are scheduled to face Cairns Magistrates Court and Children’s Court on Thursday, where the legal proceedings will continue.

Ongoing Investigation and Community Impact

All three male victims were transported to Cairns Hospital for treatment following the violent incident. The bus stop remained cordoned off as a crime scene throughout Wednesday as police officers conducted a thorough investigation into the attacks. Police tape surrounded the area, highlighting the severity of the situation and the ongoing law enforcement efforts to gather evidence.

Authorities are continuing to appeal to the public for assistance, urging anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage from Mulgrave Road or Mestrez Street between 6:00 am and 8:45 am on Wednesday to come forward. This appeal underscores the importance of community cooperation in helping police piece together the full sequence of events and ensure justice is served.

The incident has raised concerns about public safety in the area, particularly at transport hubs during early morning hours. Local residents have expressed alarm over the brazen nature of the attacks, which involved multiple victims and weapons. As the investigation progresses, police are working to determine the motives behind the rampage and whether any additional factors contributed to the violence.
