WA opposition MPs claim regional FDV funding omitted from budget in Warren-Blackwood
Regional FDV funding omitted from WA budget, MPs claim

Western Australian opposition MPs have raised concerns that the state government's latest budget has omitted crucial funding for family and domestic violence (FDV) services in the Warren-Blackwood region. Despite business plans being submitted, the funding appears to have been left out, leaving local service providers in a difficult position.

Funding gap for FDV services

The opposition claims that the budget, handed down by the McGowan government, fails to allocate the promised financial support for FDV initiatives in the area. This comes despite detailed business plans being prepared and submitted by local organisations seeking to address the pressing issue of domestic violence in the community.

Shadow Minister for the Prevention of Family and Domestic Violence, Dr. Jags Krishnan, expressed disappointment at the omission. "It is deeply concerning that the government has not followed through on its commitment to fund these vital services," he said. "The Warren-Blackwood region has specific needs when it comes to family and domestic violence support, and the lack of funding will leave vulnerable people without the help they require."

Community impact

Local service providers have warned that the funding shortfall could have serious consequences for the community. Without adequate resources, support programs for victims of domestic violence may be scaled back or face closure. This would leave many individuals and families without access to essential services such as crisis accommodation, counselling, and legal assistance.

One provider, who wished to remain anonymous, stated: "We have been working hard to develop comprehensive plans to address FDV in our region. To have the funding pulled at the last minute is devastating. Our clients rely on these services, and without them, they may have nowhere else to turn."

Government response

A spokesperson for the state government defended the budget, saying that funding for FDV services has been increased overall. However, they did not specifically address the claims regarding the Warren-Blackwood region.

"The McGowan government has allocated record funding to combat family and domestic violence across Western Australia," the spokesperson said. "We are committed to supporting victims and holding perpetrators accountable. Funding decisions are made based on a range of factors, and we continue to work with service providers to ensure resources are distributed effectively."

Opposition demands answers

Opposition MPs have called for a full explanation from the government regarding the funding omission. They have also urged the Premier to intervene and ensure that the promised money is delivered to the Warren-Blackwood region.

"This is not just about numbers on a spreadsheet; it is about the safety and wellbeing of our community," said Dr. Krishnan. "We need the government to explain why these funds were cut and what they intend to do to rectify the situation."

The issue is expected to be raised in the upcoming parliamentary sittings, with opposition MPs planning to question the relevant ministers on the matter.
