Pedestrian Thrown into Air in Melbourne Hit-and-Run, Driver Hunted
A pedestrian was violently thrown into the air during a hit-and-run incident in Melbourne's western suburbs, sparking an urgent police hunt for the driver responsible. The 41-year-old man was struck while crossing Blackshaws Road in Newport at approximately 11 pm on Thursday night.
Details of the Incident
It is believed the victim was hit head-on by the vehicle, with the impact propelling him from the car. Blood was observed on a gutter at the side of the road, indicating the severity of the collision. The driver did not stop to assist the man and instead drove away, leaving the victim to be aided by nearby residents who heard the commotion.
The injured man was transported to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with upper body injuries. Initially, police reported he was in a serious condition, but it is now understood he sustained only minor injuries.
Police Investigation and Statements
Victoria Police Acting Sergeant Jared Grech stated that there were no signs of heavy braking, such as skid marks, before or after the driver struck the pedestrian. He emphasized that the level of impact suggests the driver would have been aware they hit someone, likely resulting in damage to the front of the vehicle.
"The force of the impact and the level of injury at the time to the pedestrian, it's not minor, it's not a brush, it is a significant hit that was involved so we do believe ... that person would have known they struck the pedestrian at the time," Grech said.
He added that details such as whether the car had its headlights on are still under investigation. Grech expressed deep concern over the driver's actions, noting, "Whether you're at fault or not, at least stop and see if that person's okay. It's extremely alarming. I just don't get how anyone can do it."
Ongoing Efforts and Appeal for Information
Police returned to the street on Friday morning, canvassing the area by speaking to residents and neighbors. Officers were seen knocking on doors as part of the investigation. Authorities are actively reviewing CCTV footage from the vicinity in an attempt to obtain a description of the vehicle involved.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or possesses any information, including dashcam or CCTV footage, is urged to contact Crime Stoppers immediately to assist with the investigation.
