Bev McArthur Backs Jess Wilson as New Victorian Liberal Leader
McArthur backs new Liberal leader Jess Wilson

Veteran Western Victoria MP Bev McArthur has publicly endorsed Jess Wilson as the new leader of the Victorian Liberal Party, following John Pesutto's resignation from the role.

In a significant show of support from within the party's regional ranks, Mrs McArthur declared that Ms Wilson has "captured the imagination" of members and possesses the necessary vision to rebuild and lead the Coalition to the next state election.

A New Direction for the Victorian Liberals

The leadership change was triggered on Tuesday when Mr Pesutto stepped down after losing the confidence of his colleagues. The party room subsequently elected Jess Wilson, the member for Kew, as the new leader, with Brad Battin elected as her deputy.

Mrs McArthur, a prominent figure representing the Western Victoria Region, did not hesitate to voice her approval of the new leadership team. She emphasised that Ms Wilson's fresh perspective and clear communication skills are exactly what the party needs to reconnect with voters across the state.

The reshuffle also sees Richard Riordan retain his position as Shadow Treasurer, ensuring some continuity in the opposition's economic portfolio.

Geelong Connection and Policy Focus

Bev McArthur highlighted Jess Wilson's existing ties to the Geelong community as a major asset. She pointed out that Ms Wilson has spent considerable time in the region, engaging with local issues and understanding the challenges faced by residents and businesses.

"She understands the issues that are important to Geelong and regional Victoria," Mrs McArthur stated, underscoring the importance of this connection for the party's electoral prospects outside Melbourne.

The Western Victoria MP also expressed strong confidence in the new leader's policy priorities. She specifically praised Ms Wilson's focus on addressing the state's cost-of-living crisis, fixing the broken health system, and restoring integrity and common sense to government. These are seen as core issues that will form the backbone of the Liberal Party's platform moving forward.

Challenges and Opportunities Ahead

While optimistic, Mrs McArthur acknowledged the significant task ahead for the new leadership. The Victorian Liberal Party has faced substantial electoral challenges in recent years and requires a unified and strategic rebuild.

She believes that Jess Wilson's approach and her partnership with deputy leader Brad Battin present a compelling opportunity to present a strong alternative to the incumbent Labor government. The endorsement from an experienced regional MP like McArthur is a crucial step in consolidating internal support and presenting a united front.

The coming months will be critical for the opposition as it seeks to redefine its message and hold the Andrews government to account under its new leadership. All eyes will be on how Jess Wilson leverages her Geelong links and policy agenda to win back voter trust across Victoria.
