The Australian political community is in mourning following the tragic death of former Western Australian Labor secretary Tim Picton, more than three weeks after he was seriously injured in an alleged assault in Perth.
A Life Cut Short: Family Confirms Tragic Loss
Tim Picton's family confirmed on Monday that the 36-year-old had passed away in hospital, surrounded by his loved ones. He died at Royal Perth Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment for life-threatening injuries sustained in the incident.
In a heartfelt statement, his devastated family described Picton as a deeply devoted father and loving husband, son, grandson, brother, and uncle. "His kindness, generosity and humour brought joy to our lives," the statement read.
The Night That Ended in Tragedy
The events leading to this tragedy unfolded in the early hours of Saturday, December 27. Police allege that Picton was found unconscious outside a licensed premises in the inner-city suburb of Northbridge just after 5.30am, following reports of a disturbance.
According to police allegations, the father had fallen, struck his head on the pavement, and lost consciousness during the attack. He was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital with critical injuries and had been placed in an induced coma. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, he tragically did not recover.
A Formidable Political Legacy
Tim Picton was a respected figure in Australian political circles. He is widely credited with playing a key role in guiding WA Labor to its landslide 2021 state election victory, a result that left the opposition Liberal party in tatters with just two seats.
His political career included working as an advisor for Senator Don Farrell during the Gillard government and serving in the office of former Victorian premier Daniel Andrews. He was also the brother of South Australian Health Minister Chris Picton.
After leaving politics, Picton worked as the strategy director for resources firm Mineral Resources and served as an advisory board member for the WA Chamber of Minerals and Energy.
Justice Pursued as Community Mourns
A 20-year-old man, Brodie Dewar, has been charged with grievous bodily harm in relation to the alleged assault. He is due to face court again in February. The charges may now be upgraded following Picton's death.
The passing of Tim Picton has sent shockwaves through political, business, and community circles in Western Australia and beyond. He is remembered not only for his professional acumen but as a cherished family man whose life was tragically cut short.
