The Cook Government has taken a significant step forward in its ambitious health infrastructure agenda, naming the preferred developers tasked with delivering the crucial early works for two major hospital projects in Western Australia.
Preferred Tenders Secured for Major Projects
State Cabinet has given its approval, endorsing the selection of ADCO Constructions as the preferred tenderer for the early works at the new Royal Perth Hospital. Simultaneously, Hanssen Pty Ltd has been chosen to undertake the early works for the expanded Peel Health Campus in Mandurah. This decision, announced on Wednesday, moves both landmark projects closer to breaking ground.
The early works phase is a critical precursor to the main construction. For the new Royal Perth Hospital, located at the existing RPH site in the CBD, this initial stage will involve extensive site preparation. Key activities include demolition, excavation, and shoring work to clear the way for the future state-of-the-art facility.
Focus on Peel Health Campus Expansion
At Peel Health Campus, the early works will concentrate on establishing the essential infrastructure needed to support the massive forthcoming expansion. This includes new substations, upgraded water mains, and other vital enabling services. The full redevelopment aims to dramatically increase the hospital's capacity, adding more than 100 beds and constructing a multi-storey clinical services building.
Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson emphasised the importance of this milestone. "Selecting the preferred tenderers for early works is a key step towards delivering these transformational projects for WA," she stated. The Minister highlighted that this progress keeps the government on track to commence main construction works in the coming years.
Timelines and Broader Health Infrastructure Push
The government has outlined an aggressive timeline, with contracts for these early works expected to be finalised and awarded by mid-2025. This progression is part of a wider, multi-billion dollar health infrastructure program under the Cook Government, which also includes the recently opened Perth Children's Hospital and the ongoing construction of the new Women and Babies Hospital.
These redevelopments are positioned as essential responses to growing demand from expanding populations, particularly in the Peel region, and the need to modernise ageing health assets like Royal Perth Hospital. The government asserts that these projects will not only improve healthcare delivery but also generate thousands of jobs during the construction phase.
With the early works developers now selected, attention will turn to the finalisation of designs and the procurement process for the main building contracts, marking the next major phase in Western Australia's hospital construction boom.
