The state of New South Wales is mourning the loss of one of its most distinguished and beloved public figures. Dame Marie Bashir AD CVO, who made history as the state's first female governor, has died at the age of 95.
A Life of Pioneering Service and Compassion
Premier Chris Minns shared the sad news on Tuesday evening, expressing profound condolences to Dame Marie's family, friends, and the countless individuals inspired by her extraordinary life. He confirmed that a state funeral will be held to honour her immense contribution to the people of NSW, with details to be announced soon.
Dame Marie Bashir served as the 37th Governor of New South Wales from 2001 until 2014, bringing what the Premier described as "immense dignity and compassion" to the role. Her 13-year tenure was marked by deep respect and affection from the public, a reflection of the trust she built over a lifetime dedicated to service.
From Riverina to Government House: A Remarkable Journey
Her story began in the Riverina district, where she was born in Narrandera. Educated at Narrandera Public School and later Sydney Girls High School, she pursued medicine at the University of Sydney, graduating with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 1956.
Her professional life was defined by a passionate commitment to psychiatry and public health. Before her vice-regal appointment, she was a clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Sydney and held significant positions within child, adolescent, and mental health services. This work formed the bedrock of her lifelong advocacy for mental health, education, and social inclusion, particularly for the young and marginalised.
Legacy of Advocacy and National Honour
Dame Marie's contributions were recognised with numerous honours. She was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1988 for services to child and adolescent health. In 2006, Queen Elizabeth II invested her as a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO). Her highest honour came in 2014 when she was named a Dame of the Order of Australia for her eminent service to the administration, public life, and people of NSW, and to medicine as an advocate for improved mental health outcomes.
She was married for 61 years to Sir Nicholas Shehadie, a former Lord Mayor of Sydney, until his passing in 2018. Dame Marie Bashir is survived by her three children and six grandchildren, who inherit the legacy of an extraordinary Australian whose life was a testament to duty, empathy, and groundbreaking achievement.
