A section of decorative light casing has fallen from Perth's Boorloo Bridge onto pedestrian walkways, raising serious safety concerns and prompting immediate investigations by state authorities.
Incident Details and Immediate Response
The incident occurred when part of the bridge's lighting system detached and fell approximately 15 metres onto the pedestrian access areas below. Fortunately, no injuries were reported despite the falling debris landing in areas frequently used by walkers and cyclists.
Transport Minister Rita Saffioti confirmed the incident and assured the public that immediate action had been taken. "Main Roads has attended the site and removed the loose section of the light casing," she stated, addressing concerns about public safety.
Government Assurance and Quality Defence
Despite the alarming incident, the State Government has strongly defended the bridge's overall quality and structural integrity. Minister Saffioti emphasized that the bridge remains safe for public use while investigations continue into the specific cause of the fixture failure.
The Minister addressed criticism from opposition members, stating that "the quality of the bridge is very good" and highlighting that such maintenance issues can occur with any major infrastructure project. The government maintains that the incident represents an isolated maintenance matter rather than a fundamental design or construction flaw.

Authorities have initiated comprehensive inspections of the entire bridge structure to identify any potential similar risks. Maintenance crews are conducting thorough assessments of all lighting fixtures and external elements to prevent future incidents.
The Boorloo Bridge, previously known as the Matagarup Bridge, has experienced other maintenance challenges since its opening, including issues with the zipline attraction. However, officials stress that these are separate from the current lighting fixture concern and that regular maintenance protocols are being followed.
