Perth Police Officers Dive into Swan River for Dramatic Early Morning Rescue
In a remarkable display of courage and quick thinking, two police officers plunged into Perth's Swan River early Thursday morning to rescue a distressed woman who was clinging to a channel marker and calling for help. The incident unfolded around 5:40am near Riverside Drive, close to the Kwinana Freeway on-ramp, after emergency services received reports that a person had entered the water.
Urgent Response in Challenging Conditions
Upon arrival, police and St John WA crews located the woman, who is in her 30s, approximately 200 metres offshore. She was holding onto a red channel marker and struggling in the water, with conditions deemed urgent and potentially dangerous. Without hesitation, two officers entered the river and swam out to her position, demonstrating exceptional bravery in the face of risk.
The officers managed to keep the woman calm and stable while awaiting further assistance. Their efforts ensured her safety until Water Police arrived on the scene with a vessel. All three individuals were then brought aboard the Water Police boat and transported to Elizabeth Quay, where paramedics were waiting to conduct assessments.
Medical Attention and Recognition for Bravery
Following the rescue, the woman was taken to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital for a precautionary medical check-up to ensure she had not sustained any injuries or health issues from the ordeal. Meanwhile, both officers are being closely monitored for symptoms of hypothermia, a common concern after exposure to cold water, highlighting the physical risks they undertook during the operation.
In recognition of their heroic actions, police have announced that a recommendation for a Royal Life Saving bravery award will be submitted. This formal acknowledgment underscores the exceptional nature of the rescue and the officers' willingness to put themselves in harm's way to save a life.
