Townsville's Horror Night: Police Probe Burdell Incident, Black River Crash
Police investigate Burdell incident, serious Black River crash

Townsville police faced a confronting and busy night shift, responding to two serious incidents that unfolded within hours of each other. Officers were first called to a violent disturbance in the northern suburb of Burdell, before rushing to a serious single-vehicle rollover on the Bruce Highway at Black River.

Violent Incident Rocks Burdell Suburb

The first emergency call came in around 9:20 PM on Tuesday night, drawing police to a residence on The Esplanade in Burdell. Initial reports indicated a violent incident had occurred at the address.

Upon arrival, officers secured the scene and began their investigation. A Queensland Police Service spokesperson confirmed that a crime scene had been declared. Forensic officers were photographed at the location, meticulously collecting evidence well into the early hours of Wednesday morning.

While specific details of the injuries sustained are still under investigation, police have confirmed that one person was transported to the Townsville University Hospital for treatment. The nature of the disturbance and the relationships between those involved are now the focus of the police probe. No arrests had been made public at the time of the initial reports.

Serious Crash Closes Bruce Highway at Black River

As police continued their work in Burdell, another critical incident was reported just after 11:00 PM. Emergency services were dispatched to the Bruce Highway at Black River, following reports of a single-vehicle crash.

The incident involved a utility vehicle that had left the roadway and rolled. The crash resulted in significant damage to the vehicle and serious injuries to its occupant. The male driver, who was the sole person in the car, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the Townsville University Hospital for urgent medical care.

The crash forced the closure of the Bruce Highway in both directions for several hours, causing major disruptions for late-night and early-morning travellers. Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) crews worked to make the scene safe, while forensic crash unit investigators began the task of determining the cause of the accident.

Community and Police Response

The back-to-back serious incidents stretched police and emergency service resources across the Townsville region overnight. The contrasting nature of the calls—a violent urban disturbance and a major rural highway crash—highlighted the diverse challenges faced by first responders.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about either incident to come forward. For the Burdell investigation, any witnesses or individuals with dashcam or CCTV footage from The Esplanade area between 8:30 PM and 10:00 PM are asked to contact police.

Similarly, for the Black River crash, investigators are appealing to motorists who were travelling on that section of the Bruce Highway around 11:00 PM and may have witnessed the vehicle's movements prior to the rollover.

Both investigations remain active, with police expected to provide further updates as more information comes to light. The incidents serve as a stark reminder for the community regarding road safety and the importance of reporting concerning behaviour to authorities.
