A 24-year-old woman from New South Wales is facing serious criminal charges after Australian Federal Police officers discovered a staggering $312,000 in cash hidden in her carry-on luggage at Perth Airport.
X-Ray Reveals Alleged Stash
The discovery was made on Sunday, 2 December 2025, during a routine security screening. As the woman passed her suitcase through an x-ray machine, Perth Airport security staff noticed anomalies and alerted the AFP immediately.
Upon attending the scene, federal police officers conducted a search. They allegedly found the huge sum of money concealed inside two black plastic bags. The cash was bundled in $50 and $100 notes.
Flight Plans and Federal Charges
The woman, who was due to fly back to NSW the following day, was subsequently charged with one count of dealing with the proceeds of crime. The swift action by airport security and AFP officers prevented her from leaving Western Australia.
Detective Inspector Matt Taylor of the AFP stated that the investigation is now focused on determining the origin of the substantial amount of cash. He emphasised the collaborative role of airport partners in protecting the community and the integrity of Australia's economy.
A Warning from Authorities
Inspector Taylor issued a clear warning to anyone considering moving large amounts of unexplained currency. "Anyone detected travelling in possession of significant amounts of unexplained cash will be investigated to determine whether the source of those funds is lawful," he said.
The AFP reiterated its commitment to ensuring that air travel is not exploited as part of a criminal supply chain. This incident highlights the ongoing vigilance at Australian border points against money laundering and the movement of illicit funds.
