Police have arrested a man and a woman following a dramatic police pursuit in Warrawong that concluded inside a shopping centre on Wednesday afternoon.
Incident details
At approximately 2:10pm on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, officers from the State Crime Command's Raptor Squad attempted to speak with the occupants of a parked vehicle on Shellharbour Road in Warrawong.
While engaging with the female driver, she allegedly reversed the vehicle, ramming an unmarked police car before fleeing the scene. A pursuit was immediately initiated.
The vehicle slowed down on Cowper Street, at which point the male passenger exited the moving vehicle while carrying a small child and fled on foot. Police later located the 23-year-old man and the child at a nearby shopping centre on Cowper Street.
Further developments
The vehicle continued to drive around the Warrawong area before being stopped on Bent Street. The 22-year-old female driver underwent a roadside drug test, which allegedly returned a positive result for methamphetamine.
A second small child was found inside the vehicle. Both children were uninjured but were assessed by NSW Ambulance paramedics as a precautionary measure.
The woman and man were taken into custody and transported to Lake Illawarra Police Station, where investigations are ongoing.
