A 30-year-old man has been charged following an alleged rampage through the Townsville central business district early Monday morning, which resulted in significant damage to several businesses and vehicles.

Incident Details

Police allege the man went on a destructive spree around 2:30 am, targeting multiple properties along Flinders Street and surrounding areas. It is claimed he smashed windows of at least five businesses, including a café, a clothing store, and a pharmacy, causing thousands of dollars in damage.

Additionally, several parked cars were vandalized, with windows broken and body panels dented. Witnesses reported hearing loud noises and seeing a man running through the streets before police arrived.

Arrest and Charges

Officers patrolling the area apprehended the suspect a short time later, allegedly finding him in possession of a metal bar believed to have been used in the attacks. The man, a resident of Townsville, was taken into custody without incident.

He has been charged with multiple counts of wilful damage, entering a premises with intent, and possession of an implement used to commit an indictable offence. He is expected to appear in the Townsville Magistrates Court later today.
