Queensland Police have launched an investigation into a threatening message targeting a major shopping centre north of Brisbane, placing officers on high alert as a precautionary measure.
Details of the Threat
The Queensland Police Service (QPS) circulated an internal alert after receiving information from Crime Stoppers this past Wednesday. The tip-off warned of a potential risk linked to Westfield North Lakes, a popular retail hub located approximately one hour's drive north of the Brisbane CBD.
The specific message, reportedly sent to an informant, advised people to "Stay away from Westfield North Lakes on 19.12.2025, it is only the beginning." Police confirmed the message was received by the informant on December 15, which was the day following the devastating terrorist attack at Bondi Beach.
Context Following Bondi Beach Tragedy
The threat emerges in the shadow of the national tragedy at Bondi Beach. On Sunday evening, two men armed with high-powered firearms opened fire at a Hanukkah event attended by members of the Jewish community. The attack resulted in sixteen fatalities, including one of the gunmen, and left dozens more injured.
Police stress that the shopping centre threat is currently non-specific and unconfirmed. No identifying details are known about the individual who allegedly sent the message. Furthermore, the informant who provided the tip to Crime Stoppers declined to give any further information, stating they did "not want to be involved."
Police Response and Public Assurance
Authorities have emphasised that there is no confirmed or imminent threat to public safety at this stage. The internal alert and increased police presence are standard precautionary procedures when such information is received.
The QPS is treating the matter with utmost seriousness, particularly given the recent events in Sydney. Investigations are ongoing as officers work to verify the credibility of the threat and trace its origin. The public is advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police immediately.
