A Perth man has admitted to the horrific murder of his mother, whom he set alight inside her own home in a shocking act of domestic violence.
A Fatal Attack in a Family Home
Luke Hanif Sekkouah, aged 32, pleaded guilty in the Supreme Court of Western Australia on Tuesday to murdering his 56-year-old mother, Fatima Hanif. The tragic incident occurred on the afternoon of October 28, 2023, at the victim's residence on Caminada Way in the southern Perth suburb of Warnbro.
Prosecutor James Mactaggart outlined the grim facts to the court. He stated that Sekkouah arrived at his mother's house that day. An argument ensued, during which Sekkouah doused his mother in a flammable liquid. He then used a lighter to intentionally set her on fire.
Emergency services rushed to the scene after receiving desperate calls. Despite their efforts, Ms. Hanif suffered catastrophic injuries. She was transported to Royal Perth Hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later.
The Aftermath and Legal Proceedings
The court heard that Sekkouah did not flee the scene. He was arrested by police at the property and has been in custody ever since. The guilty plea was entered on the first day of what was scheduled to be a three-week trial, avoiding the need for witnesses and family to relive the trauma in court.
