A man is fighting for his life in hospital after suffering a serious medical episode during an arrest by police in Sydney's west on Monday morning.
Police Respond to Domestic Incident
Emergency services were called to a residence on Nipper Street in Homebush at approximately 8.30am following reports of an alleged domestic violence incident. Officers from NSW Police attended the scene and subsequently entered a nearby unit block.
Police then arrested a 52-year-old man. During the arrest, officers deployed OC (Oleoresin Capsicum) spray. Authorities stated the arrest was made to "prevent a breach of the peace."
Medical Emergency After Arrest
Shortly after being taken into custody, the man suffered a sudden medical episode. Paramedics treated him at the scene before rushing him to Westmead Hospital, where he was reported to be in a critical condition.
Critical Incident Investigation Launched
The events have triggered a formal critical incident investigation. This probe will run alongside the ongoing investigation into the initial domestic incident report.
In a statement, NSW Police confirmed the process will be independently reviewed. "The investigation will be subject of an independent review by the Professional Standards Command and oversight by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission," a police spokesperson said.
Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers.
