Man charged with aiding suicide in Cairns

A 47-year-old man from a Cairns suburb has been formally charged after police alleged he assisted an elderly man to end his life. The incident occurred in the Earlville area, prompting a major response from Queensland emergency services.

Police Investigation Launched After Morning Death

Emergency services were called to Mulgrave Road in Earlville, Cairns, at approximately 8:00 am on Saturday following reports of a sudden death. The scene was secured, and a formal investigation was initiated by the Queensland Police Service (QPS).

By 11:45 am, detectives had declared a crime scene as they worked to piece together the circumstances surrounding the elderly man's death. The investigation focused on the relationship between the deceased and the accused.

Allegations of Assistance Lead to Serious Charge

The QPS will allege in court that the 47-year-old Woree man, who was known to the deceased, aided him in his death. Following their inquiries, police took the man into custody and laid a single charge.

He has been charged with aiding suicide under Queensland law. The charge is a serious criminal offence, reflecting the police's determination that the man's actions went beyond mere presence and constituted direct assistance.

Court Date Set for Early 2026

The accused man has been processed and released on bail, pending his first appearance before the judiciary. He is scheduled to face the Cairns Magistrates Court on 9 January 2026.

This case highlights the complex legal and ethical issues surrounding assisted death in Queensland, where such acts remain a criminal offence outside specific, tightly regulated frameworks.
