A man armed with a knife allegedly held up a fast food restaurant in Jesmond on Saturday, prompting a significant police response that lasted several hours.

According to a brief statement from police, the man threatened an employee before fleeing the scene on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash. The robbery occurred at approximately 11:25 am at the KFC restaurant located within the Jesmond shopping centre complex.
Multiple police units converged on the area, leading to an extended operation. The restaurant was immediately closed and cordoned off with police tape as investigators began their inquiries.
Injuries and Public Safety
While no physical injuries were reported as a result of the incident, it is understood that a man was transported by ambulance to the Mater Hospital in Waratah. Police confirmed there was no immediate threat to the public, but officers remained on the scene throughout the afternoon.
The operation was concluded around 2:30 pm, with police confirming that their inquiries were ongoing.
