Kidnapped Tobacconist Arrested on Firearms Charges After Dramatic Police Raids

In a shocking twist to a recent kidnapping case, a western Sydney tobacconist who was abducted from his store just weeks ago has now been arrested on serious firearms charges. Bilal Bou Melham, 53, was dragged from his Mount Pritchard shop in February by four masked men and held at a derelict property in Jural for two days, sustaining severe injuries during the ordeal.

Police Rescue and Subsequent Arrests

Police stormed the property, rescuing Bou Melham and arresting a 16-year-old boy at the scene. A second man was later apprehended in Penrith, adding to the complexity of the investigation. However, the case took a dramatic turn when authorities conducted raids on Bou Melham's shop, car, and home.

During these raids, police allegedly seized more than 39,000 illicit cigarettes, six firearms, and prohibited drugs. The Fairfield Local Court heard that Bou Melham has a lengthy criminal history, including previous jail time for firearms offences, which has raised questions about his involvement in the kidnapping incident.

Serious Charges and Bail Refusal

Magistrates noted that while some of the seized firearms were replicas, the charges are still considered serious due to the nature of the items and Bou Melham's past. As a result, he was refused bail and will remain in custody until at least May, pending further legal proceedings.

Ongoing Investigations and Possible Links

Detectives are now probing possible connections to other crimes in the area. Notably, a neighbouring minimart was firebombed in April last year, ram-raided the following month, and then set ablaze by masked men in June. These incidents suggest a pattern of violence and criminal activity that authorities are working to unravel.

The case highlights the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in tackling organized crime and illegal firearms in Sydney. As the investigation continues, more details are expected to emerge about the motives behind the kidnapping and the subsequent arrests.
