A man has been arrested after allegedly going on a destructive rampage in Geelong's CBD, smashing windows and disabling traffic lights, causing widespread chaos and disruption in the city centre.
Details of the Incident
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when the man, believed to be in his 30s, began smashing windows of several businesses along Moorabool Street and Malop Street. Witnesses reported seeing the man using a metal pole to break windows, causing significant damage to storefronts and vehicles parked nearby.
Impact on Traffic Lights
In addition to the property damage, the man also allegedly disabled traffic lights at several major intersections in the CBD, leading to traffic chaos during peak hour. Police were forced to direct traffic manually while emergency services worked to restore the traffic lights.
Police Response
Police responded to multiple calls from concerned citizens and business owners. The man was eventually subdued and taken into custody without further incident. He is currently assisting police with their inquiries and is expected to face charges including criminal damage and endangering public safety.
Community Reaction
Local business owners expressed shock and frustration at the incident, with many reporting significant damage to their premises. One café owner on Moorabool Street described the scene as "chaotic and frightening," adding that customers had to take cover as the man smashed windows nearby.
Geelong Mayor Peter Murrihy condemned the rampage, stating that such behaviour would not be tolerated and that the city would work to support affected businesses. "This is a senseless act of vandalism that has caused unnecessary disruption and fear in our community," he said.
Traffic Disruptions
The disabled traffic lights caused major delays for commuters, with traffic backing up along key routes through the city. Public transport services were also affected, with buses experiencing delays as they navigated the congested streets.
Investigation Ongoing
Police are continuing their investigation and have urged anyone with information or dashcam footage to come forward. The man is expected to appear in Geelong Magistrates' Court later this week.
