A man has been killed in a late-night shooting in the inner-Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy, sparking a major police manhunt for the fleeing gunman.
Shots Fired Near Brunswick Street Intersection
The violent incident unfolded just after midnight on Saturday. Gunshots rang out near the intersection of Brunswick Street and King William Street in the heart of Fitzroy. Emergency services rushed to the scene where they discovered a man with serious gunshot wounds.
Paramedics worked on the victim for a considerable time, administering critical care. However, despite their efforts, the man could not be saved and he died at the scene from his injuries. He has not yet been formally identified by authorities.
Vehicle Escape and Bullet-Riddled Car Found
Victoria Police confirmed that the shooter is believed to have fled in a vehicle before police and ambulance crews arrived. At this early stage, investigators are still working to determine if more than one offender was involved in the attack.
As detectives scoured the area, their attention turned to a nearby parked car. The vehicle, found just metres from the Fitzroy Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, had a smashed windscreen and was peppered with bullet holes. The proximity of the violent crime to a school has added to the community's concern.
Major Investigation and Appeal for Information
A large crime scene has been established in the area as the homicide investigation gets underway. No arrests have been made so far, and a manhunt for those responsible is actively progressing.
Police are urging anyone with information, dashcam footage, or CCTV from the Fitzroy area around midnight on Saturday to come forward. Anyone with information is strongly urged to contact Crime Stoppers anonymously.
