Man ordered out of QLD after Gold Coast boat arson charge
Accused boat arsonist ordered out of Queensland

A man accused of deliberately setting a boat ablaze on the Gold Coast has been released on bail under strict conditions that force him to leave Queensland.

Court hears details of alleged arson attack

Benjamin Bruce, 45, appeared in Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday facing a single count of arson. The charge relates to an incident on January 2, where a vessel moored in the Broadwater near the North Street boat ramp was allegedly set on fire.

Police prosecutors told the court that Bruce appeared to be acting out of a desire for revenge when he allegedly boarded the boat around 3:30pm and ignited the blaze. The court heard the offence may have a domestic nature, involving a man who owns the vessel and a woman.

Dramatic escape and arrest

After allegedly starting the fire, Bruce is said to have escaped the burning vessel by swimming back to shore. Police tracked the 45-year-old and arrested him on land. He was treated at the scene for minor burns to his face.

While no one else was injured in the incident, the boat was completely destroyed. Dramatic images showed bright orange flames engulfing the vessel as firefighters battled the blaze.

Strict bail conditions imposed

The court was informed that Bruce has a criminal history in New South Wales, including a breach of an apprehended violence order (AVO). Despite this, he was granted bail with severe restrictions.

Under his bail conditions, Bruce must live in Lismore, NSW, and is only permitted to return to Queensland for court appearances. He must also stay at least 100 metres away from any airport.

When questioned by media after his release, Bruce offered little comment. After being asked if he had anything to say about the boat, he replied "Nup" before telling a reporter to "Get out of my face please."

Benjamin Bruce is scheduled to face court again next week.
