$1.5 million cash found hidden in van lounge, two charged

Two men have been charged after police in New South Wales made a staggering discovery during a routine traffic stop, uncovering $1.5 million in cash hidden inside a lounge in the back of a van.

Routine Stop Leads to Major Discovery

The incident unfolded on the Hume Highway at Yass, in the state's south, around 8.35am on Tuesday. Highway Patrol officers pulled over a Toyota Hi-Ace van for a standard alcohol and drug test.

The 25-year-old driver underwent both a breath test and a drug screening, with both returning negative results. However, officers proceeded to search the vehicle, leading them to a lounge that was separated into two pieces.

Lounge Conceals a Fortune

Upon inspecting the lounge, police found a suitcase and two shopping bags stuffed with banknotes. The total amount of cash was later estimated to be a massive $1.5 million.

Authorities immediately seized the money, along with the van and several mobile phones, for forensic examination. The driver and his 37-year-old passenger were both arrested and taken to Yass Police Station for questioning.

Court Appearance and Bail Conditions

Both men were subsequently charged with recklessly dealing with the proceeds of crime valued at $100,000 or more. They were initially refused bail.

The pair fronted the Bail Division Court on Wednesday, where they were granted conditional bail. Their case has been adjourned, and they are scheduled to reappear in Goulburn Local Court on January 21, 2026.

This significant seizure highlights the ongoing efforts by NSW Police to intercept and disrupt the movement of illicit funds, often linked to organised crime, on the state's major transport routes.
