A 27-year-old man from Wollongong has appeared in court following allegations he went on a crime spree targeting multiple businesses across the region. The accused, who cannot be named for legal reasons, faced Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday charged with a series of offences including break-and-enter, theft, and criminal damage.
Details of the Alleged Spree
Police allege that the man targeted several commercial premises in Wollongong and surrounding suburbs over a two-week period in January. The spree reportedly involved forced entry into shops and offices, with cash and electronics stolen from at least five locations. In one incident, a window was smashed to gain access to a retail store, causing significant damage.
Arrest and Charges
The accused was arrested on Monday following a police investigation that included reviewing CCTV footage and gathering witness statements. He was charged with five counts of break-and-enter, three counts of theft, and two counts of malicious damage. Police will allege the total value of stolen goods exceeds $15,000.
Court Appearance
Magistrate Michael Stoddart granted bail under strict conditions, including a curfew and a requirement to report to police three times a week. The matter was adjourned to March for further mention. Defence lawyer Sarah Jenkins indicated her client would likely plead not guilty to some charges.
Community Impact
Local business owners have expressed frustration over the spree, with some reporting increased insurance premiums and security costs. Wollongong Business Chamber president Mark Jones said the incidents highlight the need for better security in commercial areas. Police have urged business owners to review their security measures.
The man is scheduled to reappear in court on March 15. The investigation remains ongoing, and police have not ruled out further charges.
