A 33-year-old man has faced Joondalup Magistrates Court for the first time after being charged over a fatal hit-and-run incident on the Mitchell Freeway in Perth. The accused, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is alleged to have struck a pedestrian on the freeway before fleeing the scene earlier this month.
Court Appearance Details
The man appeared via video link from custody, where he was formally charged with causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop after an accident, and failing to render assistance. Magistrate Elizabeth Chetwin adjourned the case to a later date for further mention. The accused did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody.
Incident Recap
The fatal collision occurred on the Mitchell Freeway near the Cedric Street exit in Stirling on the evening of March 2. Emergency services were called to the scene but the pedestrian, a 49-year-old woman from Balcatta, died at the scene. The driver allegedly left the area without stopping or providing aid.
Police launched an investigation and located the vehicle, a white Toyota Hilux, abandoned in a nearby suburb. The driver was arrested several days later after a public appeal for information.
Legal Proceedings
The case has been adjourned until April 12 for further mention. The man remains in custody. Police have indicated that further charges may be laid as the investigation continues. The victim's family has been informed of the court proceedings and has requested privacy during this difficult time.
This incident has sparked renewed calls for stricter penalties for hit-and-run offenders in Western Australia. Road safety advocates have highlighted the devastating impact of such incidents on families and the community.
