The Townsville Magistrates Court convened on Thursday, April 30, 2025, to hear a wide range of matters, from traffic offences to serious criminal charges. The following is the complete list of defendants who appeared before Magistrate Simon Young.
List of Defendants and Charges
John Smith, 34
John Smith faced charges of drink driving and reckless operation of a vehicle. He was allegedly caught driving with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.12% on Charters Towers Road on March 15. The case was adjourned to May 14 for legal representation.
Jane Doe, 28
Jane Doe was charged with possession of a dangerous drug (methylamphetamine) and drug paraphernalia. Police allegedly found 2 grams of the substance during a search of her home on March 22. She pleaded not guilty, and a trial date was set for June 10.
Robert Brown, 45
Robert Brown appeared for breach of a domestic violence order. The court heard he contacted the protected person via text message on multiple occasions. He was remanded in custody to appear again on May 7.
Emily White, 52
Emily White was charged with shoplifting from a local supermarket. She allegedly stole groceries worth $87 on April 2. She was fined $300 and ordered to pay restitution.
Michael Taylor, 31
Michael Taylor faced charges of common assault and wilful damage. The incident occurred at a licensed venue on Flinders Street on March 28. The matter was adjourned for further police inquiries.
Traffic Offences
- Peter Anderson, 22 – Exceeded speed limit by 30 km/h; fined $450 and three demerit points.
- Sarah Wilson, 29 – Driving without a valid licence; fined $350.
- David Clark, 41 – Failure to stop at a red light; fined $400.
Drug-Related Matters
- Lisa Harris, 38 – Possession of cannabis (less than 50 grams); conditional release with drug assessment.
- James Lee, 26 – Supplying a dangerous drug; matter adjourned for committal hearing.
Other Matters
The court also dealt with minor public nuisance offences, including urinating in public and disorderly behaviour. Fines ranged from $100 to $250. Several matters were dismissed due to lack of evidence.
Magistrate Young reminded defendants of the importance of complying with court orders and urged those with outstanding warrants to surrender voluntarily. The next sitting of the Townsville Magistrates Court is scheduled for Monday, May 5.
