Subiaco councillor Mark Burns stormed out of a council meeting on Tuesday night, alleging the city is breaking the law over the leasing of Harborne Street land.

Accusations of illegality

Mr Burns accused the City of Subiaco of acting unlawfully in its handling of the lease agreement for a parcel of land on Harborne Street. He claimed the council had failed to follow proper procedures and that the lease was invalid.

“The city is breaking the law, and I cannot sit here and be part of this charade,” Mr Burns said before leaving the chambers.

Background of the dispute

The land in question is a council-owned property on Harborne Street that has been the subject of a long-running dispute. The council had entered into a lease agreement with a private developer, but Mr Burns argued that the process was flawed.

He said the council had not adequately consulted with the community and had not considered alternative uses for the land. “This is a public asset, and the community should have a say in how it is used,” he said.

Council’s response

Mayor David McMullen defended the council’s actions, saying the lease was entered into in accordance with the law. “We have followed all legal requirements, and the lease is valid,” he said.

The mayor expressed disappointment at Mr Burns’ outburst, saying it was unproductive. “We need to work together for the benefit of the community, not walk out when things don’t go our way,” he said.
