The City of Canning has officially revealed the results of a significant $3 million refurbishment at the popular Riverton Leisureplex, with the upgraded facilities now open for community use. The major works, which were completed in early December 2025, are designed to enhance safety, accessibility, and comfort for the thousands of residents who rely on the centre each year.
What's New at the Leisure Centre
The comprehensive upgrade program touched almost every part of the facility. A key visual change is the installation of a brand-new pool liner, alongside the retiling of the spa and extensive regrouting in the steam room. Safety and comfort have been boosted with new anti-slip flooring and a fully rejuvenated sauna.
Significant attention was paid to family and accessibility needs. The family and baby change rooms have been refurbished, while the female pool deck change rooms have been completely rebuilt from the ground up, featuring modern tiling, fixtures, and more spacious shower and changing areas.
Behind the scenes, a substantial investment of over $1 million was dedicated to essential infrastructure. This includes critical upgrades to pumps, liners, and a new custom-built, high-capacity hot-water system that delivers more than four times the previous hot water output.
Focus on Inclusivity and Community Wellness
Improving access for all patrons was a central goal of the project. Notable enhancements include an upgraded universal access toilet and temperature-controlled shower facilities designed for easier use. The first-aid room has also been refurbished to offer better privacy and functionality for emergencies.
The centre's communal areas haven't been forgotten. Visitors will notice improved airflow and climate control throughout the foyer and function spaces, creating a more pleasant environment year-round. New signage guides the way, and a vibrant new mural celebrates the achievements of local emerging young swimmers, adding a touch of community pride.
A Long-Term Investment for Canning Residents
Mayor Patrick Hall stated that the investment reaffirms the council's commitment to providing top-tier, community-focused recreation infrastructure. He emphasised that Riverton Leisureplex is a vital hub for a diverse range of users, from swim school families and seniors in wellness programs to physiotherapy groups and regular gym-goers.
"These upgrades ensure the facility remains welcoming, inclusive and fit for purpose for many years to come," Mayor Hall said. He acknowledged that while many improvements are immediately visible, the critical behind-the-scenes work on essential systems will make a real difference to the centre's long-term reliability and the daily comfort of its users.
The Mayor also thanked members and visitors for their patience during the renovation period. The revamped precinct is now poised to better serve the community, supporting health, wellness, and social connection for a wide cross-section of Canning residents.
