Volunteer Awards Celebrate North Queensland's Finest
The most dedicated community workers in North Queensland have been honoured at the annual Volunteer Awards, a ceremony that recognises the selfless contributions of individuals who go above and beyond to support local organisations and causes. Held in Townsville, the event brought together volunteers from across the region, highlighting the vital role they play in strengthening communities.
Outstanding Contributions Recognised
The awards ceremony featured multiple categories, each designed to honour different aspects of volunteer work. Among the winners was Sarah Johnson, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award for her decades of service with the local Meals on Wheels program. Johnson, a retired nurse, has delivered meals to the elderly and disabled for over 30 years, often going out of her way to provide companionship and support.
Another notable recipient was Mark Thompson, who won the Youth Volunteer of the Year award for his work with the St John Ambulance cadet program. Thompson, a university student, has dedicated countless hours to first aid training and community event coverage, inspiring other young people to get involved.
Community Impact
The awards also highlighted the diversity of volunteer work in North Queensland. Categories included Environmental Volunteer of the Year, won by Lisa Chen for her efforts in coastal clean-ups and wildlife rehabilitation, and Sports Volunteer of the Year, awarded to David Brown for his coaching and administration of local junior rugby league teams.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mayor Jenny Hill praised the winners and all nominees, stating: "Our volunteers are the backbone of this community. They give their time, energy, and skills without expecting anything in return, and we are incredibly grateful for their dedication."
Support for Volunteers
The event was organised by Volunteering North Queensland, an organisation that supports and promotes volunteerism across the region. CEO Rachel Green emphasised the importance of recognising volunteers: "These awards are just one way we can say thank you to the thousands of people who make a difference every day. We hope their stories inspire others to join the volunteer community."
For those interested in volunteering, resources and opportunities are available through the Volunteering North Queensland website and local community centres.
