Shire of Murray chief executive Dean Unsworth has been named the 2025 Local Government Leader of the Year at the IPAA WA Achievement Awards luncheon on December 12. The award was presented before more than 600 public sector peers.
Mr Unsworth was recognized for his leadership philosophy rooted in collaboration, engagement, and sustainable development. He expressed shock and humility, stating, “I see it as a team award for all of the hard work so many people do.”
With over two decades of experience in local government, Mr Unsworth has held roles at the City of Bunbury, Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes, and Shire of Gnowangerup. Since becoming Murray’s CEO in 2007, he has expanded priorities to include economic development and place-making, and increased community involvement in decision-making.
Shire president Douglas McLarty praised Mr Unsworth’s strategic leadership, noting that his advocacy and planning since 2016 have secured hundreds of millions in government investment, driving significant growth and transformation. Key initiatives include the Food Innovation Precinct WA and the Exchange Hotel refurbishment.
Mr McLarty highlighted that staff appreciate Mr Unsworth’s open, collaborative, and outcome-focused approach, and that council holds high regard for his professionalism in achieving outstanding community outcomes.
