In a prestigious ceremony attended by over 600 public sector professionals, Shire of Murray Chief Executive Dean Unsworth was celebrated as the 2025 Local Government Leader of the Year.
A Collaborative Leadership Philosophy Recognised
The honour was formally presented at the IPAA WA Achievement Awards luncheon on December 12, 2025. Unsworth's award-winning leadership style is deeply rooted in principles of collaboration, community engagement, and a firm commitment to sustainable development.
Expressing his gratitude, Unsworth stated he was "very shocked and humbled" by the recognition. He was quick to frame the accolade as a collective victory. "I see it as a team award for all of the hard work so many people do," he said, praising community-focused councillors, dedicated staff, and engaged residents. "This is a Shire of Murray award rather than an individual award."
Decades of Service Driving Regional Transformation
Bringing more than two decades of local government experience to his role, Unsworth's career includes positions at the City of Bunbury, Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes, and Shire of Gnowangerup. Notably, he served as joint CEO for the Shires of Murray and Waroona between 2019 and 2021.
Since his appointment as Murray's CEO in 2007, he has strategically broadened the shire's focus to champion economic development and innovative place-making, while significantly boosting community involvement in council decisions.
Strategic Wins and Organisational Respect
Shire President Douglas McLarty lauded Unsworth's exceptional strategic leadership, which has delivered substantial outcomes across multiple fronts. "Dean has achieved significant outcomes across economic development, tourism, environment, and organisational transformation," McLarty affirmed.
A hallmark of his tenure has been securing major government investment. Since 2016, his advocacy has helped secure hundreds of millions in funding, fueling one of the most transformative growth periods in the shire's history. Key projects under his guidance include the establishment of the Food Innovation Precinct WA and the refurbishment of the historic Exchange Hotel.
McLarty also highlighted Unsworth's standing within the organisation, noting his open, collaborative, and outcome-focused approach empowers staff and is held in high regard by the council. "We congratulate Dean on this very worthy award," McLarty concluded.
