Residents and visitors planning to welcome 2026 in Wollongong can expect a significant and highly visible police presence, with authorities committing all available resources to ensure a safe celebration.
High-Visibility Patrols Across City and Waterways
In a statement released ahead of the festivities, NSW Police confirmed that general duties and specialist officers will be conducting patrols across the Illawarra region from day through into the night. The operation is described as the largest of the year for the police force.
The strategy is designed to reassure the thousands of people expected to attend community events and fireworks displays. Police emphasised that the increased numbers are not in response to any specific threat but are a proactive measure to assist the public.
A Multi-Faceted Safety Operation
The police operation will extend beyond land-based celebrations. Officers will also be monitoring waterways to ensure compliance with maritime laws, including strict drink-driving rules and requirements for safety equipment on both recreational and commercial vessels.
Additionally, patrols will be active across the train network. Authorities have issued a specific warning regarding fireworks, reminding the community that a licence is required to purchase or use them, as illegal fireworks pose serious risks of injury, property damage, and fire.
Minister's Call for Responsible Behaviour
NSW Minister for Police and Counter-terrorism, Yasmin Catley, underscored the shared responsibility for a safe night. "We want people to celebrate the New Year but people must own their behaviour. Keeping each other safe is on all of us," Catley said.
She paid tribute to the emergency service and transport workers who will be working through the night, stating they deserve respect and their directions must be followed.
"Make good choices and you'll have a great night. But if your behaviour becomes aggressive, dangerous or reckless, police will respond and it will not be tolerated," the Minister warned.
The coordinated effort highlights the comprehensive planning undertaken by NSW Police to manage one of the busiest nights on the social calendar, aiming to ensure that Wollongong's New Year's Eve celebrations are both joyful and secure for all attendees.
